AAR 2 - How About Those MPGs!!

Here's another After Action Report (AAR) from my recent trip to Colorado and Utah.

  1. I notice the same thing on my 2 door hard top or soft top setup with 3.73 gears and stock BFG mud terrain 32" tires and 6spd manual. If I am driving at a max of 100kms (60mph) I can get 10l/100km (23mpg) but if I push it up to 120kms (75mph) it drops all the way to 14l/100km (16.8mpg). These numbers don't cha get much if I'm loaded or unloaded. A bit better gearing and lower torque I'm sure would help to be able to stay at that 2000rpm range while cruising down the highway. But until the diesel motor comes out this will have to do. Thanks for the video.

  4. Great video but we don’t drive Jeeps for good gas mileage! Jeep looks great. I wish I was on that Moab trip.

  5. Did you try the mileage tune? I notice with mine on the performance tune and highway driving they don’t play all that well. Highway and mileage tune👍🏼

  6. I averaged 19 mpg from Indy to Moab keeping it between 65 - 70 mph. But on my way back I averaged 22 mpg, I'm guessing because it was mostly downhill. Regardless, 19 mpg for your setup is pretty damn good!

  8. Thank you for the update. You are running very heavy. I too have experienced better MPG by slowing down a little, not so fast of a take off at stop lights and the MPG goes way up. Only place it doesn't work for me is in 4Lo. MPG goes way down and I am creeping along.

  12. Great video. I too am running a JKU 3.6L, auto trans, 37's with 4.88 gears and calibrated with the Flashcal. Did you notice a big difference in the shift points and MPG's after the ECM swap? I'm considering upgrading my Flashcal to a Flashpaq.

  15. @Me. I have exactly the same setup like you and am running again the stock OEM tune with 87 octane.If you already have the Flashcal I'd say, save your money. I tried all different tunes. No difference in shift points. Yes, when hitting the gas pedal slightly the Jeep accelerates better due to more fuel being injected at that time. However, this can become very twitchy on the trail. So back to OEM it is for me. However, am getting only 15mpg all the time. Also noticed that the sweet spot is below 65mph, but on I-5 in California you are a road block like that. In UT where there are even 80mph allowed on the freeway and folks drive 90 or so...don't get me even started.

  17. Great info. I drive like a grandpa myself as it is and am getting 18 to 19 mpg in a '16 Rubicon. The only thing that's not stock on Appa is a cold air intake. Going to take note on the RPM tip you had and see if I can boost my mpg up a hair or not.

  18. Thought about it a minute later and I am running smittybilt bumpers and sliders, with a winch on the front too. Those bring my overall weight up a little I guess.

  20. I gotta get a tuner so I can make sure mine is calibrated. I drive around 60 according to the speedo and don't weigh near what you weighed in at on your trip. I also so mostly highway driving and I still can't get any better than 14.5 mpg. I have 3.73 gears and 33's for tires and 2.5" lift which is all dealer installed items. Rest is stock....

  21. I think you are referring to his Seicane Android head unit (running the excellent Gaia GPS, also available for iOS). I put the smaller screened version in my 09 JKU and despite some setup challenges mostly love it. @o3djeeps videos on his helped quite a bit during the install even thought it is a different model (thanks!). My current advice on these head units is "get one, but consider a more widely supported reseller other than Seicane". Seicane has really poor support and very little in the way of online updates available. For my next one I'm going to look at Xtrons, Eonon or Pumpkin.   24. be honest...you had the motor off, in neutral, downhill with a 100 mph tailwind lol....thats about the only way to get 19 mpg in a jeep....the only other possibility includes the use of street pharaceuticals

  25. You should try calculating your mileage when you fill up. My 2010 2dr with 37s and 4.88 gearing claims 16.9 mpg on the dash. When you do the math at fill-up it's around 14.2 mpg. My Ram 2500 diesel is the same thing. Says 24.8 mpg but really averages out around 20.5 mpg.

  26. I’d like to know if you have any data on your MPG while on the trail?
    I under estimate my MPG for a given trail or trip, so I always have plenty in reserve. I’ve never really put the numbers to it, but I’ve never ran out of gas while out in the wilderness either. Lol.
    I agree at a constant speed and constant RPM fuel consumption at highway speeds will be steady and efficient. I thinking know your MPG on the trail where you “goose” the skinny pedal and use less efficient gears (i.e. 1st and 2nd) is important to know.

  31. Sorry - need to hand calculate or it doesn’t count. I’ve seen the computer readouts off by 10-20%. Especially with a programmer

  33. Matching an engine and tires with the correct gears definitely has a major impact on fuel mileage, but you can't fight aerodynamics if you drive a jeep or 4x4 truck. Above 65/66 mph fuel mileage will suffer. Between 66 and 70 you don't take too big a hit, but above that mpg goes south fast. My daily drivers have all been 4x4s since I got my 79 K5 and it still hold true with my current 2 door soft top JK. No, I don't always drive 65 - if I wanted high mpg I'd drive a Prius.

  34. Good morning all - 2018 JKU, Mopar 2" lift, 4.10 gearing, new 315/70/17 Ridge Grapplers, usual weight of front/rear aftermarket bumpers, front skid plate, and I was the only driver (175 lbs). Set cruise control to 65 headed up to Jersey, got a 19.1 mpg average for 238 miles. Coming back I had it pinned @70-mph, got a 17.9 mpg average. Re-calibrated new tire size with the AEV unit several days ago after measuring tire height twice. PSI started out at 37, got steady at 38 after warn-up. Total miles-to-date is 3700. Even at 70-mph I saw other Wranglers wizzing by at 75-80mph (either they had to pee or knew there were no State Police out and about)
