Troubleshooting Jeep TJ Wrangler! Won't Start but Problem Found - Project 2004

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iz-cfNV3Vx8&w=640&h=360]

I had to do a little troubleshooting to figure out why the Jeep wouldn't start, so I decided to take you through process in case this ever happens to you. Symptom: Starter doesn't even try and come on when turning the key. No click. Nothing. You can hear the starter relay trigger. Battery seems good. But it just won't crank.

  2. This happened to me January 1st. Jeep wanted me to spend several hundred on a new steering column but I found the broken part used from Daveys Jeeps. What a pain.

Thanks for the detailed troubleshooting steps.

  3. Sounds like it would be worthwhile to build a "pin" bypass lead and crank the starter from the battery....how about a video for that ....should be few inches of wire, connectors, and a toggle switch....yes?

  4. Daveys Jeep is a great place for parts. You can also get a new ignition actuator from a auto parts store that sell Dormen Parts. They make the actuator for $40. But you have to assemble it. And it can be a pain. Dealer Ships want you to buy a new steering column.

I'd rather it just work from the key as normal...but yeah... you could just make a wire like I did and add a switch and run it to any 12v source and trip the starter whenever you want. I've seen people do this. If I ever get stranded for this reason again... I know know exactly what to do... screwdriver from the hot post on the starter solenoid to that male spade for the control wire oughta fire it right up so long as the key is in the on position.

  14. Good reason to not have a heavy set of keys. Other than it's obnoxious and annoying off road.

  17. I have to think how many more potential problem points there would be on the JL if the symptom was that the starter was not turning over. I think the car manufacturers are intentionally trying to make the vehicles more complicated so as to make it so that you *have* to take your vehicle into the dealership to get a problem diagnosed. :(

More "features" equals more complexity, equals more potential failure points. :(

  19. That's a lot of stuff hanging off your key chain, all that extra weight is why it broke.
